Two Start Pitchers - Week of May 23 2022

With one week left in May, we're left to wonder how the baseball season has flown by as quickly as it has this season. I guess it's the same answer as it always is - with six weeks likely completed in your fantasy leagues it's a good time to assess where your team is now that small sample sizes are starting to get weeded out. If you need a boost to your pitching this week, there are a number of names likely on the waiver wire from our desperation mode grouping that can give you a lift in ratios or counting stats.

Each week we’ll take a look at each of the upcoming week’s two start pitchers, and give them a ranking based on the pitcher himself as well as the quality of the opponents he faces. Your high caliber SPs and pitchers with strong match ups will receive the “Start ‘Em If You Got ‘Em” grade. Pitchers with the “Strong Starts” grade can be started in most formats, but aren’t locks. Pitchers in the “Desperation Mode” category should only be relied upon if you’re desperate for counting stats or are throwing anything at the wall to see what sticks. Pitchers with the “Sit ‘Em” grade should not be relied upon this week.

Before I hear the outcry of people wondering why Corbin Burnes isn't penciled in for two start this week, Aaron Ashby is rejoining the rotation this week as the Brewers have 7 games in 7 days this week bringing Milwaukee to a 6 man rotation for the week. Max Fried has 5 quality starts in his last 6 outings - he's a must start against Philly and Miami this week. The biggest change has been a decrease in fastball usage by almost 10% and an uptick in change up usage.

After a miserable start to the season, Nick Pivetta has been excellent for the Red Sox this month by posting a 1.71 ERA and 25K in 26 innings. Although his hard hit numbers don't leave me with a ton of optimism for his overall view this season, a struggling White Sox team and Baltimore at home shouldn't give him much trouble. Adrian Houser has been quietly very good again this year, and even though he won't give you a ton of strikeouts, his ERA and WHIP have been very good for your ratios this year. Tyler Anderson has been a steady presence for the Dodgers, and even though he has a 4.04 ERA this year most of the damage has been done on the long ball. Coming off of a start where he turned in 7K in 7 innings he's poised to go against one of the lightest two start tilts this week.

Tyler Mahle and Alex Cobb have been brutal to start the year - Cobb some how has 3 wins this season despite an ERA of 5.56 while Mahle has two quality starts in 9 turns this year and a 5.23 ERA of his own. Still, the upside is there, and advanced metrics suggest they've been very unlucky with batted balls this season. Cal Quantrill has pitched well this year and has a second start against the lowly Tigers. Speaking of the lowly Tigers, there is upside in Chris Archer this week - the Tigers and Royals have two of the bottom 5 offenses in the MLB.
